Google Core Web Vitals:

How to optimize your site for better ranking?

Published: 10.04.2025.

Google constantly strives to make the internet a better place for users, and one of the key ways it achieves this is through metrics called Core Web Vitals. They have become an indispensable part of Google's algorithm for ranking websites, and their purpose is to measure the actual user experience, not just technical aspects. A poor score on these metrics can significantly impact your site's visibility in search results.

These metrics measure the following key aspects:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This metric indicates how quickly the largest and most important content on your page loads (e.g., a hero image, a large heading, the main text block). Imagine it as the speed at which the most crucial element on a newspaper's front page appears. If it takes too long, the user will flip past, or rather, close the page. The goal is for LCP to be less than 2.5 seconds.
  • First Input Delay (FID): FID measures how quickly a user can interact with your page – specifically, the time from when they first click a button, link, or enter something, to the moment the browser responds to that interaction. If the page is slow and unresponsive, the user will feel frustrated, as if the application is "lagging." An optimal FID should be less than 100 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): CLS is a measure of the page's visual stability. Do elements on the page move around while it's loading? Imagine wanting to click a button, but it suddenly shifts due to an ad or image loading, causing you to click something else instead. Such unpredictable movement is irritating and disrupts the user. The CLS score should be as close to zero as possible.

Improving these metrics directly impacts your SEO result and attracts more visits. You can improve them through strategies such as: image optimization (using modern formats like WebP, compression), lazy loading implementation (loading images and elements only when they are visible on the screen), and hosting content on a CDN (Content Delivery Network) so that data is delivered faster to users worldwide. Regularly monitoring Core Web Vitals and implementing recommended optimizations is crucial for survival and success in today's digital environment.
